The design process: How did we design public activities? (breaking the silo of groups)

hi, i’m new to karrot (hi!) and testing a couple of new groups (hoping to get one started, and an older one off Discord/Meta reliance).

i realise this video is an old post so things might have changed, but am not sure where such queries should go yet!

context:
we run weekly and monthly workshops and coworking events which we want to be visible publicly (as well as internal member-only comms, but this post is about the public aspects).

  1. i’ve set up our main weekly events under ‘public view’, but they’re not visible publicly as a collection.
    a) the link for the group’s wall sends new people to a login page: Karrot

[i’m only alowed to share 2 links here so will try adding the others in another reply]

  1. it’s not very socials/sharing elsewhere friendly - all the link previews appear like this, which doesn’t mention anything to do with our group, and would be off-putting to someone expecting to find info about our community/events:

  2. one of the events (which i’m also setting up as a standalone group) is a monthly meetup, which happens on the second sunday every month. i can’t get the ‘custom date’ to work.
i’ve used ‘every second sunday’ as the tips suggested but it gives me an error400.
i’ve tried different formats too, but they just share the wrong date!
    any tips?!

happy to post this elsewhere if this is the wrong place - there are likely to be more questions along the way!

thanks xf

[additional links for point 1 referencing]

b) the link for ‘all our activities’ sends new people to a login page: Karrot
c) noting that each individual event is public (Karrot) but we would like to share a ‘front public wall’ with info about the group and all its recurring events, with central public comments (not just one event at a time, since the info asked and shared is likely to be common to all events).

Hi @feesable and sorry for the late reply! Just saw your message here…

Not much has changed actually. This is a good place for queries.

I see why! Non-members don’t have access to the group’s wall. But it should redirect non-members to the right link, which is the group preview page

There is also a specific link for each public event that can be shared.

Yes, we’re quite aware of that and it’s been brought up before, so there is a work in progress: https://codeberg.org/karrot/karrot-frontend/issues/2617

Definitely something to improve!

When you click on Custom for the frequency when creating an activity it shows a link below the Recurrecy rule field to calculate the rule. There I have tried the following rule and it worked:
FREQ=WEEKLY;INTERVAL=2;BYDAY=SU

Yes, that’s how it should work for people who are not group members and not logged in

I’m not sure I understand it correctly, but would not the public page for the group (aka group preview) suffice for that? It shows all of your upcoming public events: https://karrot.world/#/groupPreview/728

I hope my answers are helpful, and it is actually valuable feedback for us that you share all of this here!
