Hello team,
a waste law has recently been passed in Spain which is now coming into force; it does not allow waste to be handed over to a ‘collective’, but stipulates that it must be delivered to a food bank, an NGO, companies, or social organizations registered in official registers…
We’d like to know if anyone or any group has experienced this and how we might handle it… to prevent the loss of Food Sharing Bilbao.
Is this happening in any other European country?
We’d appreciate any ideas on how we can keep going.
Thanks and have a good day!
Waste Law:
Hello,
I am Daniel from Foodsharing Luxembourg. We don’t have an anti food waste law in Luxembourg yet, but I understand that how it is framed in Spain excludes your collective. How frustrating this must be!
We created a non-profit association in 2019 to have a better stand towards companies, but we don’t have the “public utility status” (“statut d’utilité publique” in French) because the bureaucracy required would be currently too high for us as volunteers. This hinders us from saving food from at least one company because it cannot officially declare it as in-kind donation in its tax declaration, so it prefers to continue throwing food away to mark it as a financial loss in a different way.
Have you considered creating a light-weight non-profit association? Or would it be possible to join an existing non-profit association with a similar theme? I have seen the latter working for a collective with a regional focus joining a very local alternative association.
Best greetings
