Discussion

  • what to do?

    • draw a map more specifically on how different groups and communities are using other tools (the one on consumer/participatory culture is a good basis)
    • sketch
  • discussion on the sketch: wall on group’s public page

    • is it possible to comment on a public wall without registration? Low barriers to interacting is nice.
      • Something like Jitsi?
      • Unverified e-mail address?
    • what about moderation? anybody in the group could delete messages
  • idea about choosing whether a post is to the public or the group

    • taps into the discussion about a whole different conversation model for Karrot, like a feed with posts for the whole group, from a specific place, etc.
      • from separate walls to individual posts
  • sketches

    • 1st sketch: quick contact by e-mail, like a contact form
    • 2nd sketch: SMS updates/notifications, to reach people on the fringes of the group
      • the point is to mobilize people, but also include others who would not be in the group
      • group or just broadcast messages?
    • 3rd sketch: public activity link
    • 4th sketch: public group page with wall, activities and “send message”
    • 5th sketch: different ideas for communicating with people outside the group
      • opt between public/members-only posts
      • contacting group just to give some feedback, without mandatory e-mail registration (but prompt them to do it)

Discussion

  • after the sketches pick some of the sketches and turn em into a storyboard.
  • start with an assesment of the sketches
    • pick the ones we like the most that can be the basis for a prototype/prototypes
    • reflection: we only focused on one form of breaking the silo, from an outsider perspective and not, for instance, between groups
    • What is the big idea (most interesting thing) behind the sketch?
      • “Public group page” (dogsaving seoul) sketch
        • opening up communication/low barrier for communication between the ‘public’ and group members
      • “Making things public” sketch
        • easeness for group members to share something beyond group barriers
      • “Public activity link” sketch
        • Low barrier to join an activity
      • “SMS updates/notifications” sketch
        • more inclusive, widespread used technology
      • “Contact the group by e-mail” sketch
        • simple way to just open a communication channel to the group
    • some thoughts: how to make public information on Karrot easily discoverable? Some kind of notification/subscribe/broadcast system? E-mail, SMS…? Maybe an idea for a new sketch, combining different ideas above!
    • consider the different types of communications proposed in the sketches: one-to-many, many-to-many
      • e.g. donating food to the group (one-to-many)
      • interaction between group members who distribute the food and those who get it (many-to-many)
    • What are the ideas that would have the biggest impact?
    • Any solution should be a low barrier one to access information and communicate (not yet-another-account kind of thing)

Actions/Outcomes

  • try another sketch combining some of the best ideas (Bruno)
