Hello!
It’s advent time… and https://adventofcode.com/ time! For the first time I’m participating, partly inspired by this blogpost Improve your programming skills with Advent of Code : Juha-Matti Santala
As is says in the blog post
In pretty much every developer community I’m part of, we have a forum/Slack/Discord threads for each day, asking for help, sharing our solutions and generally getting excited about the puzzles.
I realised, that community is you! So here is a post, even if we’re a few days in already
I’m taking it a bit slower. As each puzzle comes with two parts, I was thinking to spread it out over two days. Plus it’s only 12 puzzles this year, but that way you get to 24!
So anyone excited too? @nicksellen @Juancito @leni1 @Jay @tiltec @dannekrose wilhelm? not sure who else is contributing/connected to karrot, developing and on this forum.

I did post my progress here: Nathalie Szycher (@nathaliesz@social.coop) - social.coop, given my rhythm above I’ve just completed Day 2… maybe I’ll look at Day 3 now
Would be nice to use a programming language actually useful for karrot - was thinking of javascript or python, but so far I’ve decided to use java. Mainly cause I did a course on it recently and had it all set up plus some basic knowledge from that course. Which felt easier to start with. Would be curious to compare solutions, as I feel mine are a bit lengthy. But mostly pretty happy that I got it AT ALL
Haven’t pushed anything to my codeberg repo yet, could also imaging doing that at some point!

I’ve been enjoying these puzzles a great deal. I’ve been excited to learn Ruby, so I’ve been doing these in Ruby. My day 3 solution initially had a subtle bug that led me to a arcane corner of Ruby syntax that was very difficult to track down. Once I had a MWE, I joined the Ruby Discord (meh) to ask what was going on. Here’s my MWE for that (not logically related to my exercise solution):
def ret1
1
end
print (ret1(
)
+ 2), " "
print (
ret1()
+ 2), " "
print (ret1() + 2), "\n"
What do you (or others) want regarding posting and discussing our solutions here?
MWE = Minimal Working Example, right?
And have you found a similar thread in their Ruby Discord?
Are you publishing your solutions somewhere?
Good question! I’m very keen to talk about the ones I did, and careful not the hear about the ones I haven’t gotten to yet
I’m curious if anyone reading this feels more a “beginner” and we could share our struggles… or maybe experienced people struggle, too!
Probably one thread for each day would be useful. I wonder about taking that to our karrot team & feedback group and opening a separate place. Would you be up for joining that group (again) @Juancito ?
Yep!
Yeah, I noticed people talking about the AoC there, but I’m not really inclined to discuss the puzzles there. Discord makes it hard to engage with conversation that has already “flowed by”, and I’m more excited to discuss them with you and other people I know.
No; I imagined just posting them inline in posts here. I could publish them somewhere else, though.
That makes sense! I think your idea of one thread per day could be good. You prefer starting threads within Karrot, instead of here on the forum? I would be willing to join that group again if that’s where you want to discuss them.
Now I’m off to look at day 5! I’m excited.
Yes, that’s what I was proposing! → Karrot
